You Were Made For This by Michelle Sacks

If you saw us you’d probably hate us. We look like the cast of an insurance commercial; shiny, happy us. The perfect little family, living the perfect little life.

You Were Made For This cover

Merry and Sam, and baby Connor. An idyllic life in Sweden; a happy family making the most of a fresh start. Merry’s oldest friend is coming to visit. Won’t she be delighted and impressed to see how perfect everything is?

From the very first page, the menace oozed from this book. I was hooked in immediately.

We first get to know Merry and her husband Sam, who have uprooted themselves from a busy city lifestyle to re-imagine their life in rural Sweden. They are determined to give their baby son Connor the best of everything; fresh air, home-grown food, parents who are blissfully happy. The stay-at-home doting mother, and the bread-earning father.

However, it soon becomes clear that this perfect family is anything but. When Merry’s childhood friend Frank comes to visit, her arrival becomes the catalyst for the facade to unravel, and no-one will survive the fallout unscathed.

The further I got through You Were Made For This, the more the sense of foreboding grew. On one level I didn’t want to know what was going to happen, but I absolutely had to know. It was a strange feeling to enjoy a book so much when I didn’t like almost any of the characters. I feel it takes a skilled writer to achieve a feat like that.

You Were Made For This is not nice. But it is a gripping story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

It is the end, I thought, and what of it.
